Q: Dr. Pressman, I want your opinion on olive oil. Does olive oil provide the same type of coating protection as fish oil does to your stomach?
Dr. Pressman: Well, it does, and it doesn’t. If I had to pick the one that’s most protective to the lower stomach and intestinal tract, I would probably choose olive oil. And if I focused on the upper esophagus and stomach, I would probably go with the fish oils. However, the good news is that you don’t have to make a choice because you should take both - there’s no doubt.
You can have 2 tablespoons a day of olive oil and 3 grams a day of fish oil - just take them at different times. You’re hedging your bets if you take both – they are both great for the gut and the body in general.
